2022-10-10 TN, Copperhill - camping with other friends who have vans

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The drive from Atlanta to Copperhill was just over 100 miles and took about 2 hours to drive.

Many years ago, I joined an email list called Yahoo-Vandwellers. That has now 'gone away' and been replaced by a Facebook group.

Our host posts the dates and place of the gathering and everyone who is able, attends. The group calls this gathering, the GTG - or Get ToGether.

I had planned to stay 2 weeks. BUT, the weather forecast for 10/18 was for -VERY- cold weather and I left early. The others in the group also left early.

The road to the campground is 2 miles of gravel and dirt. The road leading to the campground road is several miles of pavement.

I took the picture below as I was driving home. The leaves were beautiful BUT - there is a problem. Just after I took the picture, on the right, I saw a white-plastic bag of garbage dumped on the side of the road.

I couldn't understand how someone could throw out a bag of trash like that on the side of the road. Who do they expect to pick-it-up? Why could they not just put the trash in a trash-can (at home)?

Our camping area has a grassy field that used to be a stagecoach horse coral. (We were told this on a previous trip by a local person who knew the history of the area.)

Copperhill has a large copper mine that used to have smelting nearby. The smelting caused so much acid, the vegetation of the area died. Many years ago, the mine closed and people planted many trees to reforest the area.

One of our campers, likes exploring the area and knows a lot about wild mushrooms.

He took this picture and allowed me to use it. The water bottle by the side of the mushrooms is to show the size of the mushroom.

One of our campers, works with re-purposing items and sells antiques.

The next picture is a folding camp chair which they used. Someone had used string or yarn and re-webbed it in a unique pattern.

There were several other campsites nearby and one was being used by a pair of "You Tubers".

You Tubers are people who post videos on YouTube.com. One of them was VanCampinWoody and the one with the stickers on the truck camper was T.Lee&Destiny.

I watch a lot of YouTube and plan to watch their channel in the future.

The next few pictures are about our nightly, shared meals.

When packing, I put a ice chest in the passenger seat of the van. I put any items in the refrigerator which need to be eaten while I am camping.

I put a large plastic-bottle of ice in the chest and it lasts for 3 days. After that, we eat food which is canned. We have a group dinner which involves everyone discussing what they brought that can be used.

When talking about the food that we brought, I went to my van and put all the cans that I had packed on the footstep. I then returned to the discussion with the options that I had available

I stop at the Blue Ridge Walmart before driving to Copperhill. That Walmart is the closest one on my route to the campground.

I bought a bag of breadsticks from their discount rack and we added a bottle of Ragu sauce, Tomato Juice and noodles for dinner.

Our mushroom gatherer provided a plate of fried, 'chicken-of-the-woods mushrooms' for us to eat. They were delicious and, yes, 'taste like chicken'.

One night, we had a corn chowder, mixed with kernel corn and rice. Jiffy Mix was the cornbread which was cooked on top of a campstove at low heat and with a pot-top.

Cookies were dessert.
